The structure and functioning of phonological short-term memory
Susan E. Gathercole

Phonological short-term memory is a temporary storage mechanism specialised for the retention of verbal material. Recent advances in understanding the nature of this mechanism will be reviewed, with particular emphasis on the role played by long-term knowledge in contribution to phonological memory will be considered.
Finally, it will be speculated that the primary function of phonological memory is not to mediate immediate memory per se, but instead to support the long-term acquisition of novel phonological material over many learning episodes.
